Kathy participated in the church choir at United Community Church of Sun City, singing alto and occasionally playing flute. She was invited to join the Sun City Concert Band by the late Ed White, who sang at UCSC and played baritone in SCCB.
She offered to design posters for the band, and has done so for several years.
Kathy learned to play recorder at an early age and went on to play flute and occasionally, oboe, in school, and flute in marching and concert band at Phoenix College. Kathy earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Goshen College, Indiana, and matriculated many hours at local colleges as an adult learner.
She worked at the Arizona Republic over 15 years in advertising design, and as a freelance graphic designer, helping grow companies through print and Internet advertising.
Now semi-retired, Kathy continues freelance graphics for several clients including Women in International Trade, Los Angeles.

I grew up in a church where four-part hymns were sung acapella. I began learning to read music early, playing Recorder, Piano, then Flute and joined school bands and choirs in early years. I continued with flute and sometimes oboe in high school and college, with occasional choir experience in school and church. Though I majored in Fine Art, I continued piano lessons through college, accompanied choirs at church and led instrumental ensembles. My dad had been a member almost since the founding of The Arizona Masterworks Chorale in 1979. He convinced me to audition with AMC and I’ve been a member since then. My first season with the group, we performed two concerts in Carnegie Hall under the baton of Skitch Henderson in December 1996. AMC traveled to Washington, DC for the dedication of the WWII monument, to Hawaii for a choral festival and various destinations nearer to Phoenix, plus internationally.
I continue to support the group with my voice, graphic arts and flute, and I am a member of the Sun City Concert Band.
After a career as an advertising artist at the Arizona Republic for 17 years, I am currently Assistant to the Property Manager at work by day and a Lyft driver on weekends. I also have ongoing graphic art clients and portrait gigs.
I enjoy participation in the Concert Band as a growing, giving and sharing experience. Performing musically with a group has benefits for the individual including mood and cognitive stimulation, in addition to a sense of community.
Community attendance at band events lends an opportunity for social interaction that many are deprived of due to today’s online solitude.
